The International Mental Game Coaching Association

News Release: November 4, 2025 - Silicon Valley, California

The International Mental Game Coaching Association Announces Thomas Field is a new IMGCA Certified Golf Psychology Coach.

Thomas FieldThomas Field, based in London England, has graduated from the Certified Golf Psychology Coach program administered by the International Mental Game Coaching Association. Thomas was awarded the title of IMGCA Certified Golf Psychology Coach, (CGPC).

Bill Cole, MS, MA, Founder and President of IMGCA stated,

“It was a true pleasure having Thomas join the IMGCA Certified Golf Psychology Coach program. It’s always a treat having a golfer of his stature to speak with, because as Thomas was learning new methods and tools within the program, I was also learning from him.

Thomas wrote the best final examination for the Golf Psychology Certification program in IMGCA history.

Thomas graduated from an American university with a BS degree in psychology, and he also earned a MSc in sport psychology from St Mary’s Twickenham. So he had the theoretical, research and classic psychology underpinnings. People come to our IMGCA certification programs with a wide variety of educational background. Thomas was finding it difficult to get a toehold on starting his mental game coaching business. This is where we come in. We specialize in taking the theoretical to the street. We take research, academic studies in psychology and sports psychology, and theoretical bases across multidisciplinary arenas and operationalize the contents so people can use it at a practical level.

Thomas learned a high number of mental game techniques and tools, ranging from mental readiness methods, to attentional control methods, to mindset approaches, to emotional management methods, to communication methods, to motivational methods.

I took Thomas through a variety of mindfulness tools that he directly experienced. He said that he had not been introduced to tools of this type before, and he found them very powerful and accessible.

Thomas is very intelligent and inquisitive. He wanted to learn all he could from the program. He asked fantastic questions. He was always superbly ready for class. He was always engaged 100% in the coaching sessions. We had fantastic exploratory discussions and went back-and-forth on a wide range of topics in performance psychology.

Thomas is a very levelheaded, reasonable person. His clients really appreciate that. He is a solution-focused coach rather than a problem-focused coach. He’s very creative. He draws upon his background across a huge variety of sports, and music, and other areas to devise elegant solutions to his clients’ challenges.

With such a strong background in golf, two degrees in psychology, and now armed with the IMGCA Certified Golf Psychology coach designation, I know Thomas will be making a strong impact in the field of mental game coaching. He’s an excellent communicator, deeply passionate about golf and psychology, and his clients will resonate with that deeply.

I’m going to keep my antenna up and watch for some great things from Thomas.”

Why Thomas Joined The IMGCA Certified Golf Psychology Coach Program

Thomas struggled with the mental game when playing international academy golf. He sought assistance of a sport psychologist that changed his golf through academy golf and then competing in collegiate golf. He changed his major from business to psychology due to his deep fascination with the subject.

Thomas joined the IMGCA Golf Psychology Certification program hoping to achieve an overall architecture, methodology and philosophy to helping golfers improve their mental game. He also wanted to deepen his mental game toolkit of methods and techniques.

Thomas already had two psychology degrees and a PGA golf coach certificate, but he wanted to learn a better framework of what to do so he could have a more structured set of performance psychology procedures when working with players.

Thomas has an undergraduate degree in psychology and also a master of science in sport psychology. He was already extremely knowledgeable in both golf and psychology and sports psychology. IMGCA advanced his pragmatic understanding and capabilities as a mental game coach.

Thomas is already expanding his consulting and coaching business as a mental game coach, specializing in golf psychology.

Here Are Some Things Thomas Learned In The IMGCA Golf Psychology Certification Program

Here are some of the things Thomas learned that really resonated with him:

Identify yourself with your better shots. When you get a good shot, say to yourself, “That’s me. That’s what I do”.

Be clear about the distinction between acceptance and giving up. They are not the same thing. Acceptance means you nonjudgmentally tolerate what’s happening and view reality with clarity. Giving up means you are disgusted or depressed about the situation. Acceptance allows you to move forward and to correct mistakes and to remain optimistic and confident about what you are doing. We need to stop resisting or distorting reality. It’s best to see things as they are so we can make adjustments.

Learn to not waste mental and emotional energy on things we cannot control.

There is a limit to the amount of effort we can put into what we’re doing. Once we cross that threshold then it is called “trying too hard”. Forcing and trying does not work. Flow is what works.

Thomas said a major insight and realization for him was how to describe what he does as a golf psychology coach with credibility. He discovered that there is no need to try to impress clients by speaking scientifically or by using big words. Simple, everyday language works better because people can then understand what you are putting across.

Thomas really liked the tool of gap analysis. This helps give clients an intrinsically motivated way to view what they’re doing. The analysis doesn’t come from the coach. It comes from the client. And people do not argue with their own data. That reduces resistance between the coach and the client.

Thomas also resonated with the inner game approach as put forth by Tim Gallwey. Gallwey is a master at describing complex psychological principles and approaches so that people can access them and use them immediately.

Thomas was very appreciative of what he learned in the IMGCA golf psychology program. He said:

“Since implementing a few techniques into my own game, I am currently playing the best that I have since playing as a full time amateur. I’ve always been a very streaky player. When things are good, they were very good, when they were off...not so great. When testing out the techniques and strategies I found a few that really resonated with me and helped my game.

“I’ve also been someone that’s never been able to visualize what I’m trying to do. Since learning about verbal visualization with you, I’m not forcing my mind to see things and do things that I can’t physically do. Simply talking through the shop and what I’m trying to do it’s really helpful seeing the right shot and has also helped me commit to it.”

“Probably the one tool that I’ve noticed to be most valuable is using breathing techniques in my pre-shot routine. When under pressure and my heart rate tends to get a bit higher, using breathing techniques helped to slow things down and keep me calmer when walking into the shot.”
